Ron Ackerman Tribute

Ron journeyed to Heaven on March 13, 2019 encircled by loving family, friends and God’s Light. Ron was a treasure - the strongest, bravest man we’ve ever known who voiced his love and gratitudes every day.

Family was everything to Ron. What he wanted most was time - time to unconditionally love, share experiences, and enjoy life with all of us. Ron reluctantly leaves behind: three incredible children, Janel Bennett, Mike Ackerman, and Sarah Thomsen; six treasured grandkids - Brady Thomsen, Sierra Ackerman, Austin Thomsen, Emma Bennett, Dakota Ackerman, and Lily Bennett; his little sister whom he adored, Sandy Ackerman; and the love of his life for over forty years, Patti McNeff. Also sons in law Mike Thomsen and Matt Bennett, daughter in law Amber Ackerman, and former daughter in law Dana Ackerman. Plus much loved cousins, friends, and special daughters of his heart.

Born in 1947 in North Dakota, Ron grew up in Streeter with Sandy and their parents, Melvin and Virginia Ackerman, along with the extended family close by. Ron became an accomplished printer and moved to Wenatchee, Washington with his first wife, Connie, and their children. Ron and Patti moved to Oregon in 1987 with Ron’s motorcycle, four Quarter Horses, two dogs, a cat, and everything they owned.

Ron lived life zestfully and adventuresomely. He drove his motorcycles for over fifty years, and had more trips and motorcycles dreamed of. He successfully changed careers several times, becoming a skilled journeyman carpenter who could build anything, and did. Ron loved his and Patti’s home, Windsong Ranch, life in the country, and sharing it with the grandkids. He especially relished the peace of sitting on the back deck, listening to wind chimes while eating apples and string cheese; his favorite chime is singing now, as this is being written.

Volunteering with children was among Ron’s passions. He coached basketball, baseball and football and was a SMART reader program volunteer at two elementary schools.

After a life changing accident and spinal cord injury in 2014, Ron fought for his life and set the goal to return to coaching basketball with his friend, Coach Joe.  He reached that goal. Their team of 7th grade boys won their second consecutive league championship last Saturday, March 16.

Our family celebrates Ron’s loving life every day. Friends are welcome to join us in celebration at his Salem home on June 17, at 2 p.m.. Together we will share memories of this beautiful man who is now with his parents, Aunt Lizzi, Grandma Berta, and others who have been waiting for him.
