Merriweather Jones 87 of Albany, passed away peacefully on Saturday, at Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center with Catherine, his wife of more than forty years, at his side.
He was born in Eudora, Mississippi to Fred and Bessie Jones, the first of seven children.
After high school, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served in the 5th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division for twenty-one years before retiring in 1971. During this time he married and had four children.
Upon leaving the Army, he went to work for the State of Oregon as a psychiatric aide at the institution for the developmentally disabled. There he met his second wife, as they were assigned to the same training class and work site.
He then began his college path, first at Chemeketa Community College, then the Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University), where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. He then attended Willamette University of Law for one year.
After college he embarked on his professional career, first at Chemeketa Community College as head of the custodial department, soon transferring to the Oregon Health Sciences University as Assistant Director of Housekeeping, where he stayed for approximately eleven years. He finished his twenty-year tenure with the State of Oregon at the General Services Department in Salem.
Retiring in 1992, he was free to spend his time skiing, traveling, and enjoying time with his family.
He leaves behind his wife of nearly forty years, Catherine, with whom he he had two sons, Jeremy and Jason. From his first marriage he leaves a son, Gordon, and three daughters, Deolin, Felisia, and Jacqueline. He also leaves three sisters, two brothers, and dozens of nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, October 28th at Aasum-Dufour Funeral Home in Albany, Oregon.
